For one hour at first light, Cappadocia stops being a place on a map and becomes something closer to a dream. A hundred to a hundred-and-fifty balloons rise together over the valleys at dawn.
The fairy chimneys turn pink, then gold. Your basket drifts low through Love Valley and Pigeon Valley — close enough to see ancient cave dwellings carved into the soft volcanic rock — then climbs to 900 metres for the panoramic view over Göreme National Park and the silhouette of Mount Erciyes on the horizon.
The descent is slow, the landing is gentle, and your driver is already waiting in the vineyard with cold non-alcoholic sparkling wine.
DGCA Directorate General of Civil Aviation
This is a shared flight operated by one of our trusted DGCA-licensed partner operators in the Göreme flight zone. Pilots in our network hold between 1,500 and 4,000+ flight hours over these specific valleys, and the operators we partner with collectively run over 200 balloon flights per morning in peak season. Your basket carries up to 28 passengers divided into 8 separate compartments — your party stays together in one compartment, with clear sightlines and comfortable standing room on all sides.
All inclusive prices - no hidden fee
Your fare includes pre-dawn hotel pickup, water, Turkish tea and packaged snacks at the launch site, the flight itself, the traditional post-landing non-alcoholic sparkling wine ceremony, a personalized flight certificate, and the return drive to your hotel. Turkish VAT, the DGCA passenger fee, and the driver and pilot gratuity are already included. Nothing is collected on the day.
Safety and weather — please read before you book
Cappadocia balloon flights are weather-dependent by aviation law. We publish the honest annual numbers so you can plan around them:
- Approximately 61% of scheduled flight days operate as planned.
- Around 39% are cancelled by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority for wind, fog, or visibility.
- Summer is the most reliable window: July and August exceed 80% success rates.
- Winter is considerably less predictable: December and February often drop to the 25–30% range.
We tell you this upfront because it should shape how you plan your trip — see Tips and Tricks above for how to maximise your chances of flying, and Terms and Conditions for our reschedule and refund policy in the event of a cancellation.
04:00–05:30 AM — Hotel pickup. Your driver collects you from your hotel lobby in a clean Mercedes Sprinter or equivalent vehicle. Exact pickup time depends on the season: earlier in summer (when sunrise is around 05:30), later in winter (sunrise around 07:30). We confirm the time via WhatsApp the evening before, after the captain's pre-dawn meeting with the DGCA weather briefing.
05:00–05:45 AM — Water, Turkish tea and sweet and salty snacks at the launch site. Not a meal, but enough to take the edge off the early start. You will also meet the captain and complete the brief passenger manifest.
05:45–06:30 AM — Pre-flight briefing and inflation. The captain's safety briefing in English, covering the landing position (knees bent, hold the handles, brace on command). Then the spectacle of inflation: the burners roaring, twenty envelopes filling against the dark sky, the balloons standing up one after another. Most guests say this part is the unexpected highlight of the morning.
06:30–07:30 AM — Flight. Approximately 60 minutes in the air, with the exact duration dictated by the morning's wind layers. Pilots vary altitude across the flight: low passes through Love Valley and Pigeon Valley at tree-top level, a higher climb over Göreme to 800–900 metres for the panoramic shot, then a gradual descent. Pilots do not fly fixed routes — they read the wind and adjust live. This is the "gentle drifting" technique Cappadocia balloon captains are known for.
07:30–08:00 AM — Landing and bubble ceremony. Touch down in a vineyard, an open field, or directly onto the chase trailer (a precision landing that the best Cappadocia pilots specialise in). The traditional Cappadocia ceremony follows: a glass of non-alcoholic sparkling wine a toast from the captain, your personalized printed flight certificate, and photos with the basket.
08:00–08:45 AM — Return to your hotel. Direct drive back, with most guests at their hotel by 09:00 — in time for a proper breakfast and the rest of your day.

Book in advance. Goreme is the most high-demand balloon flight zone on Earth. April–October peak season often sells out 2–4 weeks ahead, sometimes longer for sunrise slots. Book early and lock the price.
Build a buffer day into your trip. This is the single most important piece of advice we can give you. Because 39% of flight days are cancelled by aviation authority for weather, plan to be in Cappadocia for at least 3 mornings — ideally 4. If your first morning is cancelled, you rebook for the next day. Travellers who arrive with only one available morning fly roughly half the time. Travellers who give themselves three mornings fly more than 95% of the time.
Time your trip strategically if you can. Best success rates: June (83%), August (83%), May & July (74%). Worst: February (25%), December (29%). Spring and autumn shoulder seasons (April, September, October) are the sweet spot for weather + lower crowds + cheaper hotels.
Layer your clothing. It is genuinely cold at 5 AM in Cappadocia — below freezing in winter, 8–12°C even in summer. Once airborne, the burners radiate strong heat down into the basket, so you'll want to peel layers off. A puffer jacket over a t-shirt is the typical winning combination.
Wear flat, closed-toe shoes. Trainers, walking shoes, or boots. Climbing in and out of a one-metre-high wicker basket is much easier in fabric that doesn't ride up — long trousers or jeans are better than dresses or shorts. No heels, no flip-flops.
Skip the wide-brimmed hat. The burners are open flame just above the basket, and a sudden gust can blow a loose hat toward them. A close-fitting beanie or baseball cap is fine. Tie back long hair for the same reason.
Bring a wrist strap for your camera or phone. Things dropped over the side stay over the side. The best photography happens during inflation (vertical balloon shapes against the dawn sky), in the first 15 minutes of flight (you're at chimney height), and at landing (the basket on its side with the deflated envelope across the field).
Don't worry about a fear of heights. Most guests with acrophobia find ballooning surprisingly peaceful. The balloon moves with the wind, so there's no swaying or motion sickness. The basket wall is chest-high and very stable — it feels nothing like standing at the edge of a cliff or a tall building.
Skip the heavy hotel breakfast. You'll be airborne while breakfast is served at most hotels, and the operator provides a light meal at the launch site. Bring some nuts or a granola bar if you're worried about hunger — but the post-landing non-alcoholic sparkling wine and breakfast back at your hotel will more than make up for it.
Sit at the window — but not by the burner. If you can choose your basket compartment, ask for one of the outer corners (clearer 270° views) rather than the centre compartment closest to the captain. The captain's compartment has slightly more equipment in the way.
Save space on your phone before pickup. You will take many more photos and videos than you think. Free up at least 5 GB.
Stay in Goreme or Uchisar if you can. Pickup is shortest, drop-off is fastest, and the morning balloon-watching view from a cave hotel terrace before pickup is half the experience. Avanos and Urgup are fine too — Kayseri or Nevsehir airport hotels mean a longer transfer.
Tip the ground crew if they helped you. Gratuity for the pilot is included in your fare, but the ground crew (the people who chase the balloon and pack it up) survive on small tips — a few euros each is generous and very welcome.

Weather and operational cancellation — please read
All Cappadocia balloon flights operate under the authority of the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which uses a real-time flag system to approve or cancel flights based on wind speed, gusts, visibility, and ceiling. The final decision is made by the pilot in consultation with DGCA at approximately 04:00 AM on the flight morning. Pienti Travel, the operator, and you cannot override this decision.
Historical Goreme zone success rate: 61% annually, ranging from 25% in February to 83% in June and August. This is a normal cost of flying in one of the world's most spectacular and tightly regulated balloon environments.
If your flight is cancelled by DGCA or the captain for safety, you may choose: (a) full refund within 5 business days, or (b) free reschedule to any other date during your stay, subject to availability with our partner operators.
If you cancel after the captain has confirmed the flight is going ahead, standard cancellation rules apply (see below).
Cancellation by guest (non-weather)
Full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before your scheduled pickup time
50% refund if you cancel between 24 and 12 hours before pickup
No refund for cancellations inside 12 hours of pickup, or for no-shows on the day
Booking and payment
Tour is confirmed instantly on successful payment

Health, age, height, and weight restrictions
Age: Minimum 6 years. Guests aged 66+ are welcome with a medical fitness declaration from a physician dated within 30 days of the flight.
Height: Minimum 120 cm. Passengers must be tall enough to see safely over the basket rim during flight and stand without support for one hour.
Pregnancy: Pregnant guests are not permitted to fly. This is non-negotiable under DGCA safety rules and our partner operators' insurance. We will refund in full or move your booking to a non-flight Cappadocia experience of equivalent value.
Weight: Maximum 120 kg (265 lb) per passenger. Guests above this weight may require a supplementary fare for a second basket position — please inform us at booking and we will arrange privately, with no public ticket charge.
Health: Guests with serious heart conditions, recent abdominal or chest surgery (within 6 months), uncontrolled blood pressure, or who use supplemental oxygen should consult their physician before booking.
Mobility: The flight requires stepping into and out of a 1-metre-high wicker basket with no internal seating. Guests with mobility limitations should contact us before booking — we can usually accommodate, but the ground crew needs advance notice.
Pickup and timing
- Please be in your hotel lobby at the confirmed pickup time, ready to leave. The driver will not enter the hotel to wake guests.
- We confirm exact pickup time via WhatsApp by 21:00 the night before, after the captain's weather review.
- If DGCA cancels overnight, you will be notified by WhatsApp by 04:30 AM at the latest.
Operator substitution
During peak season, your booked partner operator may transfer you to another operator on the same morning to balance flight loads. The aircraft type, flight duration, and inclusions remain equivalent. You will be notified by WhatsApp before pickup.
We work only with DGCA-certified operators with a minimum 5-year operational record and an active safety certification.
Photography and personal items
You may use your own camera or phone freely throughout the flight, including during inflation, in the air, and at the bubble ceremony. The operator's photographer offers a professional digital package for separate purchase at the landing site — entirely optional.
Pienti Travel and the operator are not responsible for personal items dropped overboard. We will recover items where safely possible and return them to your hotel.
Force majeure
Earthquakes, severe weather, restricted airspace declarations by the Turkish state, civil disturbance, or other events beyond our control may require cancellation. In these cases we offer free reschedule or full refund — your choice.
Liability and insurance
Our partner operators carry full DGCA-mandated passenger accident insurance, valid from the moment you step into the basket until you step out at landing.
Pienti Travel operates under TÜRSAB licence No. 4277 and carries Turkish travel agency professional liability insurance.
We strongly recommend personal travel insurance covering hot air balloon flights specifically — some general policies exclude them.
