Duration: 8 hours (08:30–16:30) • Type: Private tour — your party only • Pickup: Galataport cruise terminal • Language: English (other languages on request) • Operates: Daily, year-round • All-inclusive pricing — every entry fee, lunch, and gratuity already in the price
For eight hours, you walk through three empires without leaving one square kilometre. The Historical Peninsula is the triangle of land between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara where Byzantium became Constantinople became Istanbul — and where Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, and Topkapı Palace still stand within a fifteen-minute walk of each other.
This is a fully private shore excursion designed for cruise passengers calling at Galataport. Your guide meets you at the terminal at 08:30, and the day unfolds at your pace: an hour inside Hagia Sophia, the İznik-tiled interior of the Blue Mosque, the ancient obelisks of the Hippodrome, and a full exploration of Topkapı Palace — home of the Ottoman sultans for four centuries. Lunch is at Sultanahmet Köftecisi, the century-old köfte institution three generations of one family have run since 1920. The afternoon closes with free time in the Grand Bazaar before a direct drive back to your ship.
Everything is in the headline price. Hagia Sophia entry (€25), Topkapı Palace entry (₺2,500), lunch, private vehicle, your guide for the full eight hours, and all gratuities. Nothing is collected from you on the day — no cash surprises at ticket gates, no envelope at lunch.
A note for cruise passengers. We plan the day backwards from your ship's all-aboard time and guarantee your return to Galataport with comfortable margin. If your ship cannot dock or your itinerary changes, you receive a full refund — see Terms & Conditions below.
08:30 AM — Galataport pickup. Your driver and guide meet you with a name sign at the cruise terminal exit. A short briefing, then the 25–30 minute drive across the Golden Horn into the Old City — fishermen on the Galata Bridge rails, the silhouette of the Süleymaniye on the hill.
09:00 AM — Hagia Sophia. Roughly one hour inside. Justinian's basilica became a mosque in 1453, a museum in 1934, and a working mosque again in 2020. Your guide covers the Byzantine mosaics, the Ottoman calligraphy roundels, and the architectural impossibility of a dome that has stood for fifteen centuries — while routing you around the prayer-time closures.
10:10 AM — Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii). A 2–3 minute walk across the square. Thirty minutes inside this still-active imperial mosque, named for the more than 20,000 İznik tiles lining its interior. Shoes come off at the entrance (bags provided); modest dress required — see Tips & Tricks.
10:45 AM — The Hippodrome. A 3–5 minute walk. Fifteen minutes of orientation where Byzantine Constantinople raced its chariots: the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column from Delphi, and the German Fountain, standing in a square that once held 100,000 spectators.
11:15 AM — Topkapı Palace. A 10–12 minute walk through Sultanahmet's lanes. Ninety minutes to two hours inside the residence of the Ottoman sultans: the four courtyards, the imperial kitchens, the Treasury with the Topkapı Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond, and the Sacred Trusts rooms. The Harem section can be added at booking.
1:15 PM — Lunch at Sultanahmet Köftecisi. A short walk to the founding branch, open since 1920. One menu, perfected over a century: grilled köfte, white bean piyaz, pickles, semolina helva. One soft drink or ayran included; vegetarian alternatives arranged in advance. 45–60 minutes.
2:15 PM — Walk to the Grand Bazaar. A 15–20 minute walk through Beyazıt, past the Column of Constantine. Your guide takes you in through the Nuruosmaniye gate with a quick orientation: which alleys for what, where the quiet caravanserais hide, and where to open the bargaining.
2:30–4:00 PM — Free time in the Grand Bazaar. Sixty to ninety minutes on your own among 4,000 shops. Your guide stays reachable by phone inside the bazaar. No commission stops, no pressure to buy.
4:00 PM — Departure for Galataport. Vehicle pickup at the agreed gate, then the 25–30 minute drive back across the Golden Horn.
4:30 PM — Arrival at Galataport. Drop-off at the terminal entrance, comfortably ahead of all-aboard — the rest of the evening is yours.

What's not included: beverages beyond the one included drink at lunch (payable directly to the restaurant, typically €3–6) · Grand Bazaar purchases · personal travel insurance (recommended; most cruise-line coverage extends to shore excursions) · optional carpet, ceramic, or leather workshop visits — we don't include commission stops by default; ask if you'd like one added
Wear slip-on shoes if you can. You remove footwear at the Blue Mosque entrance. Slip-ons turn a fumbling two minutes into ten seconds — and the day involves 4–5 km of walking on cobblestones and marble, so comfort beats style.
Dress for the mosques from the start. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women also cover hair inside the Blue Mosque. Bring your own light scarf — the entrance loans wraps, but the queue for them wastes time. A scarf stashed in a day bag solves the whole day.
Friday changes the running order, not the content. The Blue Mosque closes to visitors from roughly 12:30 to 14:30 for the main weekly prayer. On Fridays your guide flips the sequence so you miss nothing — this is exactly why a private tour beats a fixed group schedule here.
Trust the timed Topkapı entry. Ticket queues at Topkapı routinely run 45+ minutes in high season. Your guide walks you past them with pre-purchased timed tickets — one of the least visible but most valuable inclusions of the day.
Start your Grand Bazaar bargaining at half. Opening at roughly 50% of the asking price and settling around 60–70% is normal and expected — it's a ritual, not a conflict. Shopkeepers respect a cheerful negotiator far more than a hesitant one.
Carry a little cash, but not much. Lira or euros for tea, restroom attendants, or small bazaar purchases. Almost every shop takes cards; ATMs are everywhere in Sultanahmet. Large cash amounts are unnecessary.
Keep your passport with you. Galataport occasionally spot-checks ID on re-entry, and children need passports for site entries.
Leave the big bag on the ship. Both Topkapı and the Blue Mosque enforce bag-size limits at security. A small day bag passes everywhere without a second look.
Photography is free, flash is not. All sites allow photos; flash is prohibited inside Hagia Sophia and the Topkapı Treasury. Drones are banned over the entire Historical Peninsula — leave it on board.
Pace yourself at Topkapı. It's the largest single stop of the day and the courtyards are mostly unshaded. Sunscreen and a hat in summer; the included water stays cold in the vehicle.

Religious sites, prayer times, and dress
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are active mosques and close to visitors during the five daily prayers (roughly 30 minutes each). Your guide schedules the day around the prayer calendar of your specific date
On Fridays the Blue Mosque closes approximately 12:30–14:30; the itinerary re-sequences with no content lost. During Ramadan, hours shift and we notify you of adjustments in advance
Shoulders and knees covered for all guests at both mosques; head covering for women inside the Blue Mosque. Entry can be refused for non-compliance — your guide will brief you in advance, and wraps are available at the entrance. Pienti Travel is not liable for entry denied on dress grounds
Health, mobility, and minors
The day involves approximately 4–5 km of walking on cobbled streets, marble floors, and crowded lanes. Tell us at booking about any mobility limitation — we can run a reduced-walking version using the vehicle between stops, though some interiors (Topkapı's stepped courtyards) remain partially inaccessible
Children of all ages welcome; children under 8 enter museums and palaces free under Turkish regulation, and child pricing applies to the tour service charge
Pregnant guests and guests with chronic conditions: notify us so we can pace the route appropriately. We do not refuse anyone on these grounds
Photography
Permitted at all sites; flash prohibited inside Hagia Sophia and the Topkapı Treasury. Tripods and professional equipment may require permits — tell us at booking if shooting commercially. Drone flight over the Historical Peninsula is prohibited by law
Force majeure
Earthquakes, severe weather, government closure of monuments, port strikes, civil disturbance, or other events beyond Pienti Travel's control may require itinerary changes or cancellation. In these cases we offer a free reschedule or full refund — your choice
