Duration: 8 hours (08:30–~16:30) • Type: Private tour — your party only • Pickup: Kuşadası cruise port or any Kuşadası hotel • Language: English (other languages on request) • Operates: Daily, year-round • All-inclusive pricing — all three entry fees and lunch already in the price
Ephesus is not just an archaeological site. It is a city of the New Testament — the church St. Paul built over two years of preaching, the address of one of his epistles, the first of the Seven Churches of Revelation, and the place where tradition holds the Apostle John kept his promise from the cross and brought Mary home. This tour walks that story where it happened.
The morning opens in Ephesus itself, at the site's quietest hour: the marble streets Paul knew, the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre — the very stands that filled with rioting silversmiths chanting "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" for two hours, exactly as Acts 19 records. Then the pine road up Mount Koressos to the House of the Virgin Mary, the hillside shrine visited by three popes, where guests have quiet time for prayer and reflection. Down in Selçuk, the Basilica of St. John rises over the Apostle's tomb — the church Emperor Justinian built above the grave of the man who wrote his Gospel here. After a relaxed Aegean lunch, a final panoramic stop at the Temple of Artemis: once among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, now a single column in a marsh — the very cult whose silversmiths rioted against Paul, reduced to a footnote beside the faith that outlasted it.
All three entry fees — Ephesus (€32), the House of Virgin Mary (€18), and the Basilica of St. John (€6) — plus lunch are in the headline price, along with the private vehicle, your licensed guide, and all gratuities. Nothing is collected from you on the day.
A note for cruise passengers. We plan the day backwards from your ship's all-aboard time and guarantee your return with comfortable margin. If your ship cannot dock or your itinerary changes, you receive a full refund. See Terms & Conditions.
08:30 AM — Kuşadası pickup. Your driver and guide meet you at the cruise terminal exit with a name sign — or at your hotel lobby. A 30-minute drive to the ancient city.
09:00–11:00 AM — Ephesus Ancient City. Two hours at opening time, entered by the upper gate so the whole city unfolds downhill. Your guide reads the site through its biblical layer: Curetes Street and the agoras where Paul taught daily in the hall of Tyrannus; the Library of Celsus at the street's end; and the Great Theatre of Acts 19 — 25,000 seats, the riot of Demetrius the silversmith, the crowd Paul was persuaded not to face. Near the lower gate stand the ruins of the Church of Mary, where the Council of Ephesus met in 431 AD and proclaimed Mary Theotokos — Mother of God; your guide includes it as the walk allows. History and scripture, told in the same breath, on the same stones.
11:15 AM–12:00 PM — House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana). A 15-minute climb up Mount Koressos to the stone chapel where tradition — investigated in 1891 and honoured since by the visits of three popes — places Mary's final years in John's care. Your guide gives the history outside; inside, the chapel keeps its silence. Unhurried time for prayer, the wishing wall, and the sacred spring. Daily mass is celebrated at the shrine — tell us at booking if attending matters to you, and we will time the visit accordingly.
12:20–1:10 PM — Basilica of St. John. Down to Selçuk and up Ayasuluk Hill, where Justinian raised a great six-domed basilica over the Apostle's tomb in the 6th century. The marble-columned nave still frames the grave site, the baptistery survives beside it, and the terrace looks out over Selçuk, the Artemis temple plain, and — on clear days — the Aegean. The quietest, most contemplative stop of the day.
1:15–2:45 PM — Lunch at Oasis Park Restaurant. A relaxed sit-down lunch of regional Aegean cooking — meze, grills, fresh bread — in garden surroundings near Selçuk. One soft drink or ayran included; vegetarian and dietary alternatives arranged in advance. A proper ninety minutes.
2:50–3:15 PM — Temple of Artemis panoramic stop. Five minutes away, the field where one of the Seven Wonders stood: a temple four times the footprint of the Parthenon, now a single re-erected column with storks nesting on top. Twenty minutes is enough — and the emptiness is the sermon. This is the goddess whose economy Paul threatened; your guide closes the day's story here, with St. John's basilica and the İsa Bey Mosque aligned on the hill behind — three faiths in one frame.
3:15–4:00 PM — Return to Kuşadası. A 30-minute drive back to the port or your hotel, arriving around 4:00 PM — comfortably ahead of all-aboard, with the evening yours.

Bring your Bible — and read Acts 19 in the Theatre. Standing in the stands where the riot happened, the chapter becomes reportage. Many guests read it aloud from centre-stage, where the ancient acoustics still carry every word; your guide will give you the moment. Revelation 2:1–7 at the site entrance and John 19:26–27 at Mary's house complete the trilogy.
Tell us at booking if attending mass matters to you. Daily mass is celebrated at the House of Mary; with notice, we time the morning so you can attend. It is the single most meaningful adjustment we can make to this itinerary — and it costs nothing.
The 09:00 Ephesus entry is deliberate. The site at opening holds a fraction of its midday crowd — and reflection needs quiet. The busy hours find you on a mountain and in a basilica instead.
Wear real walking shoes with grip. Ephesus is original marble, polished by twenty centuries and slippery even dry; Ayasuluk Hill adds a gentle climb. Trainers or walking sandals with tread — never smooth soles.
Dress modestly at the shrine; the rest of the day is relaxed. Shoulders and knees covered at the House of Mary — a light scarf over summer clothes does it. The Basilica of St. John is an open ruin with no dress code; sun protection matters more there.
Sun protection from the start. Ephesus and the basilica terrace have little shade, and the Aegean sun is stronger than it feels. Hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+ — even in shoulder season.
Leave a written prayer at the wishing wall. Pilgrims tie thousands of them below Mary's house. Bring your own intention on paper, or use the ribbons at hand — either way, the moment is worth arriving with something to say.
At St. John's tomb, take the terrace minute. After the grave site, walk to the edge: Selçuk below, the single Artemis column in its field, the İsa Bey Mosque, the castle above. No other viewpoint holds the region's whole story in one look.
Consider the Terrace Houses add-on. Six Roman villas with mosaics and frescoes intact — the homes of the wealthy Ephesians Paul's converts lived among. It adds ~40 minutes and deepens the picture of the city the first Christians actually knew.
Keep your passport with you. The port spot-checks ID on re-entry, and children need passports at site entries.

Religious and archaeological sites
The House of the Virgin Mary is an active Catholic shrine with daily mass; modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is the respectful standard, and silence is kept inside the chapel. Mass attendance can be accommodated with notice at booking; on feast days and during larger ceremonies, access patterns may adjust and your guide re-sequences the day with no content lost
Ephesus and the Basilica of St. John are open-air archaeological sites with uneven original surfaces and limited shade; appropriate footwear and sun protection are strongly advised
The Temple of Artemis is a free open-air viewpoint; the stop is panoramic and brief by design
The Terrace Houses section at Ephesus requires a separate ticket and is included only when added at booking
Restaurant substitution
Lunch is served at Oasis Park Restaurant; in the rare event of closure or private function, we substitute a comparable local restaurant of equivalent standard and tell you in advance
Health, mobility, and minors
The tour involves approximately 3–3.5 km of walking: a downhill route through Ephesus on uneven ancient marble, easy paths at the shrine, and a gentle climb at Ayasuluk Hill. Tell us at booking about any mobility limitation — a reduced-walking version is possible, though site terrain remains uneven
Children of all ages welcome; children under 8 enter all ticketed sites free under Turkish regulation, and child pricing applies to the tour service charge
Pregnant guests and guests with chronic conditions: notify us so we can pace the route appropriately. We do not refuse anyone on these grounds. In July–August heat, the early Ephesus slot is deliberate — carry water, which we provide
Photography
Photography is permitted at all sites; inside the chapel of the House of Mary, photography is not allowed out of respect for worshippers. Tripods and professional equipment may require a permit — tell us at booking if shooting commercially. Drone flight over the archaeological sites is prohibited
Force majeure
Earthquakes, severe weather, government closure of sites, port strikes, civil disturbance, or other events beyond Pienti Travel's control may require itinerary changes or cancellation. In these cases we offer a free reschedule or full refund — your choice
